About / data note

The map is a structural model of the Bay Area road network; its live congestion is a time-of-day model (no paid feed) — rush-hour curves, a per-edge random walk, and a structural bump for bridges and major highways.

The Flows — Sankey lens uses real measured data: ribbon widths are Caltrans 2023 AADT (per-corridor & per-bridge volumes, cross-validated against the Golden Gate District's FY2025 count) and U.S. Census ACS 2016–2020 county-to-county commute flows. The hourly allocation follows a typical weekday diurnal shape anchored to real Caltrans peak-hour shares.
